Still Teddy Time
We ate Beignets and bananas with our coffee at CafĂ© Beignet and bid farewell to the Big Easy. We loved it, I can’t wait to go back without a forced sobriety order from my doctor. Although, it was probably the only time I’ll see the city while dead sober, so that is a unique experience under the belt.
We drove all the way to Atlanta, passing through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and finally Georgia. It was one of our biggest drives. It was pretty uneventful. We ate at a Cracker Barrel and had six biscuits and sweet tea. It was delightfully southern, but pretty bad. We were quite relieved to pull into my cousins’ driveway at Ashland Farm. My cousin Lucy greeted us with two big dogs joining the welcoming party. Clay soon joined us, and Lucy suggested we go for a swim. They have an absurdly gorgeous property which includes a wonderful lake with hammocks and chairs and a grill and a pavilion and it is the best. Erica, Lucy, the dogs, and I swam in the surprisingly warm water while Clay blissed out on a lounge chair. Erica conquered her fear of dark bodies of fresh water, aided by the sandy entrance that Clay gave to Lucy as a birthday present. Overall, it was a great way to start the visit.
Back to Erica Time!
Something Teddy forgot to mention: the teensy weensy frogs that inhabit the lake. I looked down and saw tiny creatures that I thought were insects darting under our feet. I looked closer—they were frogs! They are only about thirty or forty mm long and are so adorable. After the dip in the most gorgeous lake ever, we walked back to the house. Along the way, one of the dogs—Regalo, an adorably sweet, long haired black lab—found a “stick” to carry. The stick was a large mossy log six feet long and a foot in diameter. Thank goodness Teddy wasn’t hurt when Regalo clotheslined him at the knee with his newfound toy.
Lucy fed us a delicious home-cooked meal of spinach turkey burgers, corn and salad. We were so full and sleepy that we went right to bed in the cozy room the Calhouns had set up for us, stole a glance at their Planet Earth coffee table book and fell asleep.
